And the Oscar Goes to… Twitter!

The Academy Awards were this past weekend, and of course there were joys and disappointments (can Leo just get an Oscar already?). And while 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyer’s Club and Frozen went home with some proud wins, TIME is actually declaring Twitter the big winner of the night.

Last month, we blogged about the increase of “live tweeting” big television events like the Superbowl. And the Oscars were yet another perfect example of just how engaging TV paired with social media can be. Whether you were in a designer dress in Hollywood or just chilling on the couch in sweatpants, you were able to be a part of it.

The Academy Awards were already set up perfectly for Twitter interaction, as Ellen Degeneres, with her 27.4 million Twitter followers, hosted the gala complete with her own live tweets and selfies from the night’s events. Speaking of selfies, Ellen took one star studded selfie that even crashed Twitter momentarily. This epic selfie set the record as the most retweeted tweet of all time with over 3.1 million retweets, 1 million of those happening in just 45 minutes. (This breaks the previous record held by Obama’s reelection photo retweeted over 780,000 times.)

In case you haven’t been completely convinced of the power of Twitter, hopefully its performance at last Sunday’s Oscars will change your mind. We love our movies and TV shows, and we love to talk about them even more.
