7 Ways That Social Media Impacts SEO
It’s hard to deny that social media has made an impact on SEO. Even though Google’s algorithm and many other search engines do not and will not factor in social “klout” per se, there is still overlap between the two. Think of it this way: there’s a reason why Google created Google+.
All those retweets, Facebook Likes, and pins are awesome – but do they really impact your SEO? The answer is both yes and no. Yes because it does add link potential. Someone who may not have been consciously searching for lawnmowers may have seen a link on their Twitter feed from your lawnmower company, retweeted it, posted about it on their blog, and huzzah! – SEO impact is made. No because Google still won’t factor in those other 20+ retweets. But all you need is that one, right?
Let’s also say you do a search for The Cheesecake Factory. After the restaurant’s website, nearest locations and news stories, four out of the next six results are social media related (see image). If you have a strong presence on social media and people are visiting those outlets, you can take up the whole first page of Google.
The most important thing to remember is that social media can increase the volume of traffic visiting your website, which is a key factor in search engine ranking. So even if you still have some SEO “loose ends” on your website, you can still be rewarded for quality content.
