KDMC’s humble beginnings were grounded in the early technology “convergence” of 1993. The future of technology looked bright and actually relevant to real people! Suddenly computers were popping up not just on every desktop at work but in the home as well. Folks were spinning the silicon wonder known as the CD-ROM and an “obscure” network called the Internet was just starting to make itself known.
This was the world when David Kaufer co-founded his first PR and communications agency at the age of 26. He built his early career in the high-technology world, delivering solid PR counsel to a variety of companies. He realized the industry was changing as companies producing content were younger and that technology was branching out into all facets of our daily lives. Kaufer saw a need for experienced communications professionals to service a variety of technology companies, and launched Kaufer Miller Communications.
The company boomed from a two-person office with a single ethernet networking cable between two PCs, to a 30-member firm with offices in Seattle and in the Bay Area. The agency was the 14th fastest growing private company in Washington state, named the 7th largest PR firm in the Pacific Northwest by the Puget Sound Business Journal, and was voted the 1995 Emerging Business of the Year by the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.
Fast forward to 2010. After successful senior-level communications and marketing positions at Cisco Systems, Comcast, UC-Berkeley Athletic Department and TERIS, Kaufer noticed another major shift was underway.
The technology and business worlds were experiencing another huge transformation in marketing and communications. Social media was on the rise. Terms like “Inbound Marketing” and “Marketing Automation” were making their way into conversations (yet few knew what they really meant). The days of “outbound” marketing are rapidly dwindling. The combination of consumer savvy and technology solutions makes it too easy for audiences to ignore or tune out the waves of messages consistently blasted at them. The power has shifted to the consumer – they are now able to search for and seek information and solutions for their unique problems.
